A comprehensive educational support programme undertaken by STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute), will ensure the FIFA World Cup stadia playing surfaces in South Africa are in safe hands for many years to come when the world's football stars have departed.

In a recent report from the BBC, STRI have been credited with the upgrading of the training pitches at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus, the site allocated to the England team during the World Cup.

In collaboration with number of organisations in North West Europe, STRI is developing a strategic programme on the use of biomass as an energy source. This is being funded by the EU 'INTERREG' programme, and is planned to commence in March 2011 for four years.
