Kelly Harmar is a member of the STRI Ecology & Environment Team. Kelly has an Honours Degree in Environmental Science from the University of Ulster and has a doctorate from the University of Nottingham. Her PhD studies had a practical focus and aimed to quantify the effects of aquatic vegetation on river flooding, water velocity and sediment storage. On the golf course, this work has particular significance to the management of water features, sustainable urban drainage systems, reed bed filtration systems and the recycling of wastewater. |
Relevant ExperienceImplementation of a carbon audit for The 2008 Open Golf Championship Coordination of workshops on waste management for the English Golf Union Environmental Impact Assessment - Production of environmental statements for various golf course developments coordination of site surveys, data collection. Production of wildlife guides commissioned by the R&A for the 2007 Walker Cup at Royal County Down and the 2008 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Production of methodology statement for protected species for the 2008 Open Golf Championship Competition judge for 2007 BIGGA golf environment competition. Kelly has written ecological training material for the Greenkeeper Training Committee (GTC), the body which provides education and training to golf greenkeepers. Prior to joining STRI Kelly worked as an environmental advisor at the National Assembly for Wales. She has in-depth knowledge of environmental legislation, particularly the implications of environmental designations for land management practices and public access. She also has knowledge of upcoming legislation and grant aid opportunities relating to renewable energy and sustainable water use. Through experience of practical outdoor work on an internationally protected nature reserve, Kelly has acquired specialist knowledge of the management and restoration of habitat types commonly found on golf courses, including: calcareous grassland, heathland, woodland, wetland and aquatic habitats.
