Turfgrass Pathologist

Julie is responsible for running the research trials within Turfgrass Protection Department at STRI. Research trials include evaluation of fungicides for the common turf diseases; herbicides for amenity and lawn turf; pesticides for control/management of pests including earthworms, chafer grubs and leatherjackets; wetting agents to manage dry patch and also plant growth regulators and other turf amendments including biological control agents. The STRI is officially recognised by the Chemicals Regulation Directorate as a testing site for Plant Protection Products. Julie is involved in other research on pests, weeds, diseases and associated disorders, pesticide application technology and use. Julie also deals with enquiries regarding diseases, pests and weeds affecting amenity and lawn turf including identification and advice regarding control.

Professional Experience

Julie spent her placement year in Turfgrass Biology department at STRI in 1995-96 whilst studying for her BSc in Environmental Science at University of Bradford. Julie joined the STRI in a permanent capacity in 2006 as a research technician in the Soil Physics department before being promoted to Turfgrass Pathologist in Turfgrass Protection in 2007.

Julie is currently studying for her MSc in Crop Protection at Harper Adams University College in Shropshire and having successfully completed all of the coursework modules is undertaking work on her thesis on leaf spot in ryegrass.
