Michelle helps with the day to day running of pesticide evaluation trials within turfgrass protection. The pesticide evaluation section conducts confidential efficacy trials for companies on fungicides, herbicides and insecticides. STRI is officially recognised by the Chemical Regulation Directorate to carry out this work. Further to this, independent trials on all aspects of turf management to reduce the effects of pests, weeds and diseases are carried out, including the use of wetting agent and biological control agents. Along with other staff, Michelle is responsible for booking in all test products on arrival. Material safety data sheets are obtained, and a control of substances hazardous to health assessment is completed for every product. Following successful attainment of PA1 and PA6 in 2006, Michelle has been the main spraying operator for ongoing trials. Following application of pesticides, Michelle maintains records of active ingredients application rates and weather conditions. Michelle is also responsible for running In vitro laboratory trials, which involves testing the fungicidal effects of active ingredients against various pathogens. To be able to complete In vitro studies a culture collection is maintained by Michelle, with pathogens being isolated and cultured on to agar media. Currently holding a wide collection of common turfgrass pathogens, such as C. graminicola, M. nivale, G. graminis and S. homoeocarpa. Isolated pathogens can also be used to develop inoculum for future efficacy trials. Michelle is also responsible for data analysis and report writing of completed trials. |
