Robert joined STRI in 1989 and was appointed Head of the Construction Team in 1996. He been responsible for the development of an innovative apporach to current sportsturf design. His major interest is in the design of natural turf surfaces to maximise their performance potential for sports utilising his knowledge and experience in soil management.

Robert was involved in the design and implementation of land drainage and land restoration for fifteen years with MAFF, local authority and Contractors. During his time at STRI, Robert has worked with a number of high profile sporting venues including Ascot Racecourse and Wembley Stadium.

Relevant Experience

As Head of Construction Robert has coordinated the design of many high profile turf projects including Manchester City Stadium, Wembley, Rangers Training ground, National Football Centre and the cricket outfield at Kensington Oval, Barbados.

He has worked closely with Ascot Racecourse and was responsible for the development of a unique moveable turf crossing system for access across the racecourse and the design for the re-alignment of the Straight Mile, completed in 2005.

Involvement in many sports turf projects throughout the UK for sports clubs, schools and local authorities where the budget is of prime importance.

He has worked on a number of sportsfield projects in the north west of Scotland including pitches at Shieldaig, Morar and at present he is involved at Achiltibuie.  For these projects he has designed and tendered the works and assisted by providing technical support throughout the construction to ensure successful development in difficult ground conditions.
