Ian joined STRI in July 1993 as a trainee Groundsman and went on to gain Level 3 in Sports Turf Management in 2004.
In January 2007, Ian was promoted to Head Groundsman for the STRI' s Trial Grounds. In addition to the day-to-day running of the Trials Grounds, Ian is also responsible for the general care, management and security of the buildings at STRI. He manages four full-time staff, increasing to five during the summer months. The grounds team currently maintains 60 trials of varying size on our eight-hectare site. The trials look into grass species and cultivars, rootzone materials, fertilisers, pesticides, machinery and irrigation products and artificial sports surfaces. Many of the trials are of a highly confidential nature and require strict record keeping on a daily basis. During his spare time Ian is a keen cricketer, playing for his local team. He also likes to keep up-to-date with the football and rugby and the teams he supports, whilst keeping a lookout for the pitch conditions throughout the year. |
